And unless you have a trick scabbard, you can’t draw a blade that’s longer than your arm. So, unless you’re going for a long sword, it’s better to wear it at your side.

So named Shad, who invented it, the shabbard is a sword sheath that is held in place by a strap over the user’s shoulder. Note that Shad is completely honest that his shabbard has nothing to do with history and is simply the result of his experimenting to see if it could be done. There is zero historical evidence that anybody actually used something like this.

The trick with the shabbard is that the edge along the “strike plate” is open, so you only draw the sword for about a third of its length, then pivot it out of the shabbard and tip it over your shoulder. To reverse the process, pivot the blade onto the strike plate, then let it slip into the shabbard, then down.

Though it works well, it’s easier and faster to wear and draw the same blade from the hip, as opposed to a back scabbard. This was the favored method before scabbards became popular.

Historically, there are examples of people carrying swords on their backs. But the difference between carrying a sword and wearing a sword is that carrying a sword implies just transporting it from one place to another while wearing a sword implies that it is ready for use.

I bring this up to point out that it’s quite easy to have a scabbard that can be worn on your hip or carried on your back. But to have a scabbard that can be worn in both is…problematic at best for any sword blade longer than your arm.

I won’t say it can’t be done, but I will say I’ve never seen an example of such that actually worked for both locations.

Why don’t Swords cut the sheathing?

Because they’re generally made out of things that swords don’t cut well and/or the blade does not move in the scabbard.

So first things first. In order to cut the blade must be moving against the object in question. If the blade isn’t moving, it doesn’t cut. This is why the mordschlag could work.

There are specific sword-fighting techniques where you can grab your opponent’s sword…but only after you’ve used your own blade to stop it first.

So, if your sword is properly in its scabbard, it shouldn’t be able to cut anything.

Furthermore, scabbards were often made of wood, and swords don’t easily cut wood. It is possible to cleave a scabbard with a well-placed cut from the shoulder, but it would be very difficult to generate the necessary force with the short movement involved in sheathing a blade.

Aligning the blade of your sword with the sheath or scabbard is important for preventing accidental punctures. With a leather sheath, for example, you can puncture it if the blade is misaligned, but this would require quite a bit of force.

Now, it is possible for an edge on a sheath or scabbard to eventually cut through, but this generally takes time and misalignment and is more likely with a sub-optimal sheath design. I discovered this when I found my truck axe had sawn through the stitching along the edge. I repaired it by inserting a thin leather spacer for the edge to rest against and keep it out of accidental contact with the stitching. However, that sheath only enclosed the edge of the axe blade, so it was still possible to bear the sheath against the edge in a way that wouldn’t really happen with swords.

All of this combined is why swords don’t cut through their sheaths or scabbards.
